The World Para Ice Hockey Championships are headed to Moose Jaw this summer, bringing together disabled hockey players from around the world.
The event is hosted by Hockey Canada and is the first time the World Championships are hosted in the Great White North, as well as the first international para hockey event to be held in Canada since the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games. Also known as sledge hockey, para hockey sees players seated on sleds and using specialized skates to navigate the rink, with all the hard-hitting action Canadian hockey fans love. The host Canadian national team, which are four-time champions of the event, will look to recapture the gold from the United States, who were the winners of the previous edition in the Czech Republic in 2021.
Canada will be joined by seven other top national teams over 20 games, including two four-team round robin groups and a knockout tournament culminating in a gold medal game. The tournament will be looking to partner with local businesses and organizations to help promote the championships, given a relatively short turn-around. Promotional methods such as flyer printing and local media advertising are key for marketing amateur sporting events at all levels.
The 2023 World Para Ice Hockey Championships will take place at the Moose Jaw Events Centre from May 28 to June 4.
