Moose Jaw will be hosting what is advertised as the first ever no-gi-only grappling event in Saskatchewan this October.
The Sask No-Gi Open Tournament focuses on a form of combat grappling that is heavily inspired by mixed martial arts. Whereas traditional competitions in fields such as Brazilian jiu-jitsu and judo use ceremonial robes, or gis, no-gi grappling uses thinner rash guards or bare chests. The lack of an easy material to grab onto changes the complexion of grappling contests, the goal of which is to make the opponent submit using holds or gain a dominant position. The Sask No-Gi Open and tournaments like it also allow for a greater variety of techniques and strategies from multiple martial arts.
The tournament will feature different divisions for weight, gender, age, and experience level. Early registrants receive a promotional T-shirt. All participants and coaches must be pre-registered for the tournament and be members of the SaskBJJ organization. Spectators will also be able to buy tickets for the event and enjoy food and drink on site. Success at martial arts competitions like this is often celebrated through banner printing and trophy cases in local gyms and dojos. The Open is hosted by Moose Jaw’s own Control Jiu Jitsu.
The Sask No-Gi Open Tournament will take place at Saskatchewan Poly Technic on October 7.
