Residents of Moose Jaw and the surrounding area who want to get out on the ice and go fishing, skating, etc. are being asked to exercise caution and use their common sense about whether it’s safe or not.
The Saskatchewan Ministry of the environment issued the plea, and the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation’s executive director Darrell Crabbe added his voice to the discussion. He noted that some people have already taken to going out on the frozen water, and he stressed how important it is to check it for thickness before walking or taking a vehicle out on it. He further went on to say that for many people, it’s only considered safe if it is at least two feet thick. Signs can be placed around spots that are popular or winter recreation reminding the public to use caution before venturing out on the lake or river.
The CEO of Moose Jaw’s Wakamow Valley Authority pointed out that the nights have been cold, allowing the water to freeze, and that there are several things people can look for before venturing out on to it. They should look for stress cracks, the appearance of air bubbles or a slight discoloration, or anything else that could indicate the ice has weaknesses in it that make it unsafe.
It was noted that it can be fun to go out on the frozen water, and exercising a little bit of caution can help to make sure that there will be no problems.
