For some residents of Moose Jaw, living in poverty is a fact of everyday life. A group of volunteers decided to try it out themselves for a week to experience what others have to go through.
The ‘Poverty Costs Challenge’ asked each person who took part to live with limited food, no transportation of their own, to try being homeless, or even all three. Those who stepped up to the plate include the city’s Chief of Police, a city counsellor, principals from two local high schools, a teacher and his grade eight class, and several others. For the whole week, they were not allowed to accept food, lodging, or rides from family or friends.
The event was organized by the Moose Jaw South Central Regional Committee, and its chairperson decided to try undertaking all three challenges. According to her, it was not an easy time. A lack of nutritious food, having to always take all her belongings with her, and having to walk an hour and a half to work took its toll.
