Nominations for the municipal elections in Moose Jaw are now officially closed, and the full slate of candidates who will be looking to win votes this November has been released.
Incumbent mayor Fraser Tolmie will be among those campaigning for re-election. Tolmie was elected to city council in 2009 and became mayor in 2016. Two challengers entered the mayoral race late, entrepreneur John Kot and blues singer Nancy Nash.
City councillors Heather Eby, Dawn Luhning and Crystal Froese will also be running for re-election on city council, competing against twelve challengers, which include Jody Chell, Dwayne St. Dennis and Jamaal James. Moose Jaw’s electoral system will see the top six candidates make up the council, regardless of location.
Voters in the November election will also cast ballots for school board members for the Prairie South School Division. The city will select five board members, while another five will be selected from surrounding communities, divided into separate subdivisions. Ten candidates are running for Moose Jaw’s five spots, including Froese, who is looking to pull double duty with city council.
Candidates in local elections typically use tools like sign and poster printing to get their name out there. Residents will likely hear more from each candidate in the month leading up to the vote.
Moose Jaw residents will vote for mayor, city council and school board on November 9.
