“A Christmas Long Ago” aims to educate visitors about family traditions during the holidays that were a part of settler life circa 1910. The exhibit will feature traditional wooden toys to play with and participatory crafts. It is designed to be family-friendly and suitable for children five years and older, with family discount tickets available. Promotional material also emphasizes the family experience and its connection to the holidays:
“Like today, children of long ago grew more excited as the holiday season drew near – wondering what the hung stocking would hold, what new toy may be under the tree, what shape the newly cut tree would take, and what goodies the family would bake.”
The program will include an interactive holiday story with pictures, replicas, and originals of holiday artifacts. A Christmas Long Ago will also be run for visiting classes of schoolchildren in kindergarten and grades 1 and 2. Visitors will also be able to view the rest of the Museum’s collection and galleries. Exhibits like this often use methods like flyer printing and multimedia displays to help convey historic information.
The Western Development Museum’s A Christmas Long Ago program will be open to visitors on December 7 and 8 in Moose Jaw.
