Mac the Moose, the official mascot of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan will be undergoing a little bit of cosmetic surgery to reshape his antlers.
The large statue, which sits in the Moose Jaw vistor’s centre, will be receiving an “antler-ectomy” from Team Mac, the group of sculptors and designers dedicated to revising the landmark’s look. The renovations could restore Mac’s status as the “world’s largest moose”.
Standing 9.8 metres tall and weighing approximately 10,000 kilograms, Mac the Moose sits along the Trans-Canada Highway to greet drivers from across the country. Local mascots and tourist attractions are often used to attract visitors to smaller cities and towns, alongside tools like brochure printing and promotional Pens.
Built in 1984 by Don Foulds, Mac the Moose was long known as the world’s largest moose, until a statue in Stor-Eivdal, Norway called ‘The Big Elk’ was created that stands 50 centimetres taller. Some Canadians have urged renovations to increase the height, although the Norwegians have said that they will not let the record go without a fight.
Locals hoping to see some of the procedure can watch the first steps of the project tomorrow afternoon (June 5) at Tourism Moose Jaw. The alterations are hoped to be done by September in time for a new festival in the area, called Prohibition Days.
