Karate is a sport that combines physical activity with patience, focus, and grace, and five young people from Moose Jaw recently got a chance to show off their martial arts skills.
These members of the Five Hills Chito Ryu Karate Club took part in a tournament held in the town of Bon Accord, which lies near Edmonton.
The event was divided into two categories. One was kumite, which consists of sparring, and the other was kata, which is a choreographed pattern of movements.
Over 70 competitors took part in the competition, and the participants from Moose Jaw all placed highly. They brought home eight medals, ranging from gold to bronze.
While some of them had previous tournament experience, others did not.
One of the benefits that comes from taking part in a competition like this is the boost that it gives to confidence. The young people have all put in many hours of practice to hone their skills, and this provided them with not only the perfect opportunity to put them to the test, but they also got a chance to meet others who share their interest.
A tournament like this can be a real milestone for those who take part. A printing company can provide special printed certificates of merit for the competitors to take home with them as a memento of their special weekend.
