The Western Development Museum will be encouraging local people to learn about Moose Jaw’s unique cultural heritage this February with a multi-part Community Heritage Day event.
The event will kick off with a presentation by local writer Joan Soggie about her experience writing her novel Rikka, which is about one of the first Scandinavian settlers in Western Canada. Soggie will be discussing the historical roots of her story and signing Books afterwards.
As well as this, University of Saskatchewan professor Dr. Rainer Dick will be giving a presentation on German-Canadian physicist and Nobel Prize winner Gerhard Herzberg. The presentation will complement the Enterprises of the Human Spirit exhibit, which will be on display at the Museum until February 24.
The day will conclude with a screening of the documentary The Newcomers by the CBC’s Teresa Kliem. The film depicts the experience of contemporary migrants to small-town Saskatchewan with connections to the province’s history. There will also be heritage demonstrations and activities aimed at families, and screening of short films from the National Film Board of Canada. Museums typically use methods such as poster printing and social media outreach to promote events such as this.
Community Heritage Day will take place at Moose Jaw’s Western Heritage Museum on Saturday, February 11. Entry to the event is included with museum admission.
