This February will see Moose Jaw’s Western Development Museum hosting its annual Community Heritage Day, celebrating the history of “the Jaw.”
The afternoon event will feature presentations, demonstrations, and family activities, which will all aimed at giving a sense of what life was like in Saskatchewan in past eras. Different historical societies and other organizations from across the province will be involved in creating displays and activities. Last year’s event, which was the first one after a three-year hiatus, featured the work of groups such as the Sukanen Ship Pioneer Village Museum, the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society, and the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan. In addition to Moose Jaw, provincial and national heritage will be covered.
Past events have also included film screenings and have taken place across the Western Development Museum’s four locations in Saskatchewan. Attendees can also visit the Museum’s permanent collection, including aircraft, cars, and Saskatchewan’s only functional steam locomotive. It will also be hosting two scavenger hunt-like “Seek and Find” events, encouraging visitors to find words in the Metis language and images of Porter Grey caps laced throughout the Museum Galleries. Museums such as this often use methods such as interactive displays and brochure printing to convey historical information.
The 2024 Moose Jaw Community Heritage Day will take place on the afternoon of February 10 at the Western Development Museum.
