This June, Moose Jaw will be hosting the fourth annual edition of the Ruck it Up charity walk, raising money to support mental health treatment in the area.
The event challenges participants to walk a 5-kilometre distance wearing a weighted rucksack, similar to a backpack, hence the term “rucking.” The added weight is meant to represent the burden of mental illness. Children and adults can both register for the 5-kilometre distance, with different weights available. Early registrants will receive free T-Shirts and other Promotional Products, which are commonly used to help reward participants in charity runs and similar events. The main walk will follow a student ruck through the same area with classes from local schools.
All funds raised through Ruck it Up will go towards Journey to Hope, a nonprofit group which supports suicide prevention efforts and mental health awareness in the Moose Jaw area. The organization also runs its own annual fundraising events, including a more traditional fundraising events and concert. Ruck it Up also draws on business donations from community sponsors such as Robinson Contracting and Rosie’s on River Street. Fundraising events such as this often use tools like poster printing and social media to attract participants.
The 2024 Ruck it Up walk will take place at the Wakamow Valley on the morning of June 1.
