Windsor fire department saves swan

The current cold weather has presented environmental difficulties for the waterfowl and other birds that call the Windsor area home – as one unlucky swan recently discovered.

The bird found itself trapped in the ice on the Detroit River, near the mouth of the Lakeview Park Marina harbour. Its feathers were frozen into the ice, and it could not fly away and make an escape. The Windsor Fire Department sent out a ladder truck to make a rescue attempt and the firefighters used warm water to free the large bird, but they were unable to catch it so it could be moved to a safer location.

Local wildlife rescue center Wings of Wildlife Rehabilitation has reported receiving lots of calls about birds being trapped on the river, with around 30 of them coming in since mid-February.

Fire Captain Anthony Revenberg is asking people to call the fire department, police or an animal rescue group if they see a bird or other animal in trouble on the ice. He noted that it is unsafe for someone to try and help on their own, and it is best to call the professionals.

Members of the public who see a creature stuck in the ice may want to help, but may not know how. A flyer printing company can create laminated Flyers that can be placed in areas along the banks of the river, letting people know not to attempt a rescue themselves and showing them who they can call for assistance.
