Ottawa Street gets a facelift

One of Windsor’s oldest shopping areas, centrally located in the heart of the city, is undergoing a transformation. New vintage shops and antique stores are moving in to accompany the collection of restaurants, clothing stores, shore stores, hair salons and clinics.

Business owners are hoping that the insurgence of new stores will help Ottawa Street to become a niche-market for shoppers interested in vintage clothing, antiques, collectibles, and rare Books.

It all started in the 1920’s, when five stores opened for business on Ottawa Street which was just a mud road at the time. Now there are over 80 retail shops, restaurants, and services. Freed’s of Windsor is an anchor store attracting tourists from the United States and Ontario. Market Square hosts the City Market that was once located downtown.

Shoppers can enjoy a park and skating rink open to the public year round. In the summer, you can relax under some shady trees, and in the winter enjoy a cup of hot chocolate from a nearby restaurant. Named after a native clan that used to live in the area, Ottawa Street has much to offer residents and tourists. Although it is a very busy arterial road connecting Walker Road and Howard Avenue, the new additions will encourage people to stop and shop.

More information can be found on the Ottawa Street Business Improvement Areas website, including maps, special offers, coupons and directions. Businesses interested in relocating to Ottawa Street will find the map and list of businesses helpful for deciding on the best location. Printing companies, local to the area, have no doubt been busy with brochure printing and poster printing for the new development and the many new stores, restaurants, and businesses in the area.
