Non-profit group shows off new homes

A groundbreaking ceremony was held by Habitat For Humanities over the weekend, with two of the group’s latest homes to be built in Windsor showcased to attendees. The event also saw a family being given the keys to their new home.

Many local companies donated funds for the project, with Caesars Windsor and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation two of the largest sponsors. Reaumes Chevrolet also donated the use of a truck for the build. Many other companies and individuals either donated money, materials, or their time. Printing companies, for example, are often called upon to help by producing Banners for such events.

The families who will move in to these homes have said they are very grateful for the opportunity they have been given. They will be able to purchase the homes at their assessed value with a no interest mortgage. If it weren’t for this not-for-profit-group, it is unlikely that they would have had the chance to become homeowners.

The chairman of the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity noted that these homes are not a hand-out, but rather a hand up. The families have each agreed to donate 250 hours of their time to help build homes for others, and their friends and families have each committed to giving 250 hours either to future projects or to volunteer to work at the group’s resale store.

Studies have shown that living in a family home in a secure neighborhood can make a big difference in the life of child as they grow up and Habitat for Humanity hopes to make this a possibility for more people across Canada.
