New grocery store could be on the way for Windsor

Residents in Windsor’s west end may soon have some new choices when it comes to purchasing food and other grocery items.

The city has issued a building permit that will allow a company to redevelop the area at the intersection of Wyandotte Street and Crawford Avenue.

It is expected that the shop to be constructed will be a new grocery store, though it is not known at present exactly which one it will be.

In 2012 the Food Chopper closed its doors, which resulted in there not being any food markets within a distance of three square kilometers. The closest places for many people are some distance away, making it more difficult for them to purchase their groceries, especially if they have no transportation of their own.

When the brand of the store has been confirmed, managers of the upcoming grocery market could turn to local service providers for their requirements. Printing companies in the area could produce marketing materials to help publicise the store and boost foot traffic on its opening day.

According to a social worker at the University of Windsor, a lack of local grocery shops can be harmful to the neighborhood, as stores where everyone can go to shop build a sense of community and belonging that goes well beyond providing a sense of food security.
