Flu alert issued in Windsor

It’s flu season again, and Windsor’s Hotel Dieu-Grace Healthcare has issued an influenza alert in response to at least one confirmed case and a possible five others.

Bill Marra, who is the hospital’s VP of External and Government Affairs, Planning and Development, noted that though the alert has been issued, it does not mean there is an outbreak; rather, it means the facility is trying to stay on top of the situation and head things off before they get any worse.

The individual with a case of influenza H3N2 strain is in Emara Center, and is said to be stabilized and on the mend. Visitors to the facility’s 2S and 2N units are asked to wear masks for the time being, to prevent catching the flu and spreading it to others.

They are also reminded to follow good hygiene practices, such as hand washing to avoid spreading the virus. Most of those with flu-like symptoms such as a cough, runny nose, fever and muscle aches are asked to stay at home until they feel better. Those in high-risk groups – such as the very young, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems – are advised to go to their family doctor if they feel really sick.

The flu is a fact of life every year, and printing companies can help to get the word out about the importance of flu shots, how to prevent spreading it if you do catch it, and also what to do if you are in a high-risk group.
