Whitby residents are expecting to see 3,500 motorcyclists take part in the Highway of Heroes Ride, which is one of the largest demonstrations of public support for soldiers killed on deployment as well as those who were wounded and their families.
This will be the ride’s fifth year, and the route follows the ‘Highway of Heroes’, which is dedicated to the memory of Canada’s fallen soldiers. Ride organizer Lou DeVuono came up with the idea in 2008, when he joined thousands of local residents who lined the bridges along highway 401 to show respect and support for the families of fallen troops.
Watching the motorcade drive by on its way from the repatriation ceremony was a very emotional time for him, and he wanted to find way to show both military families and wounded personnel that the citizens of Canada care. Thus the Highway of Heroes Ride was born.
Those participating in the event will start to gather at Whitby Entertainment Centrum at 8:30am on Saturday June 1st. At 11:30am, they will leave for Centennial Park in Trenton. They will be joined there by up to 1,000 more bikers on their way from a rally in Kingston.
Riders can participate for free but donations are being collected for the Wounded Warriors fund and the Tony Stacey Center for Veteran’s Care. Printing companies have produced many ‘support our troops’ items, such as T-Shirts, flags and Banners, which will be proudly worn or displayed by many of the riders.
