Dance pop-ups planned for Whitby

Whitby will be hosting two Culture Pop-Up events this August, aiming to get people moving in the summer heat.

The first event will be Boots and Beats, teaching participants how to take part in a classic country line dance. Instructors from the Cheatin’ Hearts dance studio will be guiding the lessons. Dancers are encouraged to bring their cowboy boots and other “Western” garb to take part. The company encourages those interested to:

“Join us for a boot-scootin' good time as we guide you through a variety of lively line dances set to the tunes of classic Country hits and the latest chart-toppers.”

This lesson will be followed by “Soca on the Shore”, led by Chris of Fire 10 Entertainment. The class will cover everything related to Caribbean movement and dance, including soca-style dancing and movements like limbo and following the leader. Both pop-ups will be overlooking the Whitby waterfront.

These two classes are part of the summer-long Culture Pop-Ups programme designed to introduce residents to different cultural traditions and encourage fitness. The series has also included “Rhythms of Africa” in June and “Waterfront Wellness” in July. Cultural programmes like this often use everything from direct demonstrations to brochure printing to help provide both physical education and cultural context.

“Boots and Beats” will take place on August 12 and “Soca on the Shore” on August 19, both at Rotary Sunrise Lake Park.
