Originating in Asia, peonies have been cultivated for many years, and a Whitby area festival will soon put them in the spotlight.
The city of Oshawa hosts an annual peony festival, and this year will be its 20th anniversary. Many of the activities on the agenda will be free, and it will be on offer in The Michael and Judi Denny Peony Garden and the Oshawa Botanical Gardens.
As the festival is scheduled for the height of peony bloom time, those who participate will be able to view many cultivars of these plants in full flower. These will be joined by artisan markets and displays set up by community service groups, and food will be on offer as well. Live entertainment will add some extra fun to the occasion, and a peony competition is also in the works for those who would like to show off their horticultural skills.
