Management change coming to Whitby shelter

Whitby’s Durham Region Humane society has recently announced a major change in its management structure.

In an agreement between the Durham shelter and the Toronto Humane Society, the Toronto facility will take over management of its day to day operations. It will oversee administration, staff and volunteer training, fundraising, and management of animal care.

A member of the Toronto staff had been working at the shelter performing an assessment of the operations, and it was felt that it would be a perfect fit to have a management team whose members bring to the table all of their experience and knowledge from managing a successful shelter.

There will be a member of staff from the Toronto Humane Society on-site in Durham at all times, and this will allow the staff to have more time to concentrate on animal care and finding “forever homes” for them. They will be able to streamline the adoption process and spend more time educating those who choose to adopt a pet about its proper care.

The Durham facility will remain a separate legal entity, and all funds raised in the region will remain there.

This management decision received full support from the shelter’s board of directors.

A move such as this can be an excellent way for a not-for-profit organization to make the best use of its limited resources.
