Two new outdoor rinks to open in Newmarket

Newmarket residents will soon have two more places to experience winter in the great outdoors.

The city council recently announced that private funding has been secured to winterize the water equipment at Ken Sturgeon and Whipper Billy Watson parks. This will allow two new outdoor skating rinks to be built for use by the public.

Initially, an outdoor rink was built in Lions Park as part of a council pilot project, and it reports that there was a lot of public demand for more. There was, at first, only funding for two rinks in total, but the public response was so great that it was decided to try and build more. The only obstacle was the funding, and now that the $2,500 has been secured for each location, the projects can go ahead.

The town will provide water for the rinks.

It was noted that, while the skating areas can be built this year, it’s not a long-term solution to the needs of the public. It’s expected that a more permanent solution will be found in the town’s Recreation Playbook, which is expected to be released this coming spring.

A flyer printing company can create promotional materials that let people know about the new recreational facilities and their schedules, so they can go skating or join in a game of hockey.
