Newmarket festival to showcase historic instruments

Celeste Music will be holding its Early Keyboard Festival in Newmarket across the month of June, featuring classic piano music on instruments from years gone by.

The festival will be based around five public concerts featuring historical keyboards. The month will start off with “Beethoven @ 1800”, showcasing the work of one of music’s most enduring composers. Other concerts will feature the themes “Elegy and Fantasy”, “In Illustrious Company at the Graf Piano” and “Voyage to Versailles”. Students of the Celeste Music Academy will have a chance to show their skills at a Festival Showcase Concert.

The Academy’s collection of keyboard instruments includes pianos and harpsichords dating as far back as the early 16th century, including some who will be presented for the first time in North America. Classical music concerts and festivals often use methods like flyer printing and speeches to inform and educate about the songs and instruments featured.

In addition to the live performances, the Early Keyboard Festival will include workshops on music history and practice. These include competition and adult performance classes led by the Music Academy, a workshop for piano technicians, and masterclasses led by Academy Artistic Director Andrea Botticelli and expert harpsichordist Charlotte Nediger.

The 2026 Early Keyboard Festival will take place on select dates from June 5 to 28 at Old Town Hall in Newmarket.
