This March, Newmarket will be host to the First Robotics Competition, challenging high school students from across the area to prove their engineering mettle.
The competition will see teams of 25 or more students building large robots from scratch, which can be as big as five feet tall and weigh 140 pounds. The competition is designed to mimic the real world of engineering as much as possible, with teams given a limited budget and time limit, along with volunteer professional mentors.
Teams must even design their own brands to distinguish themselves from the competition, tackling tasks such as Logo Design and marketing. The finished robots will have to tackle a variety of physical tasks as fast as possible, creating a sports-like atmosphere.
The competition is one of several First Robotics events taking place across Ontario this spring, with the organization also holding First Lego League for younger children and First Tech Challenge, which focuses on programming. The goal of these events is to teach teamwork, as well as kindle a love of science and engineering in young people, with the organization offering over $80 million USD in scholarships through its various competitions. Winning teams at regional events can even qualify for the World Championships.
The Newmarket District First Robotics Competition will take place between March 3 and 5 at the Ray Twinney Sports Complex.
