Newmarket’s renowned Silver Stick junior hockey tournament is now in the Books for 2023, with the competition having made a successful return after a two years’ absence.
This year saw the 35th edition of the tournament, and 79 teams from different age groups across Ontario faced off against each other. The local Newmarket Renegades club fielded multiple teams at both A and AA levels, including a U18A team that made it to the tournament semi-finals before falling to the Orilla Terriers. The tournament was a “finals” for teams that qualified from different regional competitions, with age ranges from under 10 to under 18. Winning teams included the Woodstock Navy Jr. Vets in the U18AA category, the Toronto Eagles in U16AA, and Upper Ottawa Valley Aces in U12AA.
The event is part of the broader International Silver Stick organization, which holds youth tournaments across Ontario. Youth competitions like this typically run on volunteer efforts, tackling everything from refreshments to promotional banner printing.
The Newmarket volunteers showed additional flexibility and dedication after the tournament was postponed from January to March due to public health reasons. Winning teams may be recognized in the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Silver Stick display. The event also included a fund drive for the Hockey Helps the Homeless organization.
The 2022 Newmarket Silver Stick tournament took place between March 12 and 15 at the Magna Centre. Plans are for the tournament to make a return to its regular schedule, with US teams also involved, next January.
