Outstanding seniors recognized in Newmarket and Aurora

Nominations are now open for the Community Awards Gala for 2013. Joy of Life will host the gala to honour and publicly recognize residents aged 55 and older who have made outstanding contributions for their communities in Newmarket and Aurora.

The Joy for Life initiative began in Aurora and Newmarket after organizer Elisha MacMillan was inspired by the elders in communities during her studies in West Africa. The gala is a public recognition of the achievements of elders who held bind communities together.

Four awards will be presented and public and non-profit organizations can submit their nominations. The ‘volunteer extraordinare’ award will recognize volunteer efforts in Aurora and Newmarket, while the ‘you can count on me’ award will honor dependability and helpfulness.

The ‘radiant sunshine personality award’ will be presented to the individual with the most positive attitude. Finally, the ‘awesome innovator award’ will be presented to someone who thinks outside the box and finds creative solutions. All nominees will be invited to attend the gala, which is scheduled for March 9th at the Aurora Seniors Centre.

Local Print companies will have an important role to play in ensuring the Community Awards Gala is a resounding success. Flyer printing and banner printing will be used to advertise the event at senior centers and community centers.

The March 9th event will also include a buffet dinner, Evergreen choir performance and poetry presentation written and read by youths in the community. Nominations are due by February 28th and event proceeds will benefit the Aurora Seniors Centre.
