One rider in particular, Ken Webster, has a lot at stake that is riding on this year’s Ride to Conquer Cancer, an event that he is participating in because of how the disease has hit him too close to home. In the last couple of years, his sense of security and family life were shattered when two people close to him were diagnosed with cancer. What made his stroke of bad luck all the worse was that the diagnoses involved his father and his wife, and they came back to back in short order.

Before news of the cancer diagnoses hit him and his family, he had always sought refuge in cycling as a way of retreating from the pressures of the world. As he put it, mountain biking was a “safe place where nothing mattered,” and Webster loved biking so much that he was known to even bike to work in the early morning, rain or shine.

Consequently, when Webster heard of this event to raise money for cancer, he jumped at the chance to finally feel empowered again by participating in it, after two devastating diagnoses in his family.
