Old Town Hall debates continues in Newmarket
Old Town Hall needs a new design but Newmarket city council can’t seem to decide what might be the most appropriate one at a reasonable price tag. The historical building will be undergoing some extensive re-working, however, city council has yet to approve a suitable design. It was the only topic on the council’s agenda last week.
Price tags of rejected re-workings are between $7.6 to $9.2 million, without the costs of restorations added to the amount. So far, four re-workings have been voted down. With no approval in site after nearly three hours of questions and discussions, the committee will postpone until next week’s committee meeting.
Newmarket printers can play a role in the design and approval process, and on advertising future restorations to the public through the publication of intricate banner printings that depict the future rendering of Od Town Hall.
The project is extremely important to preserving Newmarket’s heritage. Great care is being taken to ensure that the reworked building also becomes more energy efficient, with little change in utility costs. Supporting the project will also take a toll on the town’s discretionary costs, leading councillors to be cautious about the future restoration.
Newmarket residents will furthermore not be funding the project alone. The Canadian Building Fund will cover over $5.5 million of the capital costs, with the balance coming from capital reserves.
However Newmarket city councillors decide to rework Town Hall, local printers can become involved in depicting the construction to the public both before and after completion.
