At the end of September, 35 people braved the weather to spend the night in their backyards, raising money for a planned Nature Centre at Scanlon Creek.
The event, called Roughin’ it for a Reason, was organized by the Newmarket-based Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority. Campers raised money for the project by tying the supplies and luxuries they had to donations, meaning that friends could donate to make the night a little bit more comfortable – or a bit less, for more competitive friend groups.
Participants included “celebrity campers” like Frankie “Flowers” Ferragine and his cousin, Bradford West Gwillimbury Councillor Peter Ferragine.
All in all, the campers raised $40,000 for the Nature Centre by spending the night in their backyards. The event included a livestream to connect the participants throughout the evening, including a cooking demonstration and campfire music.
The funds will be used to create a new home for the Nature Centre at Scanlon Creek, designed to replace the current aging building that has provided experiences of the Lake Simcoe region and its diverse environment for generations. Nature establishments like this provide education and involvement with the natural world, ranging from outdoor classes to Booklets, often created by brochure printing companies.
Roughin’ it for a Reason took place on the night of September 24th, into the morning of the 25th. The new Nature Centre is set to be completed by 2022.
