Although still in its preliminary approval stages, a major motion from Newmarket council supporting King Township created some hope for a weekend GO train service on the Barrie line through Newmarket. If Metrolinx goes ahead and expands the service, local Print companies could soon be very busy with creating printed advertisement to ensure that local commuters are aware of the newly instituted line.
The motion comes after a failed service project during the summer, which did not receive the ridership for which organizers were hoping. The pilot project ran during the summer months and did not run for long enough to be a success, Regional Councilor John Taylor argues.
Should another pilot period be instituted, it would include many more seasons, with commuters anticipated to take advantage of the service during weekends when driving conditions are poor. He is confident that the commuter turnout for a winter pilot would be significantly higher.
The Newmarket council’s support of the weekend GO train service could mean that local print companies could start promoting the possible new pilot line very soon. Some of ways of doing this could be via poster printing through the station and within trains, or flyer printing of the new weekend lines and timetables throughout GO stations in the York region area.
In addition to Newmarket council’s support of King Township’s bid to Metrolix and the Transportation Ministry to create weekend service, Aurora council also supported the motion. All affected communities in York Region are expected to be on board with weekend GO rail service.
