The fourth Newmarket International Festival of One Act Plays is on its way, with an octet of short works available for audiences.
The event will celebrate the return of live theatre to Newmarket, beginning with a “Coming out of COVID 19 Vac-Scene Gala” social event with live theatre performances. The festival will unfold across three nights, each with two to three plays of about an hour each.
The offerings include the comedy “The Book Club Thief”, the romantic drama “Rosa and Leo” and the soul-searching “Third Life of Eddie Mann”. The festival will conclude with awards being given for direction, performance and screenwriting.
The festival will also include a children’s matinee performance of “Gilda”, a story about a kidnapped princess. The plays were selected from over 100 entries submitted by playwrights around the world, with the winning writers including Hollywood’s Jim Geoghan and Australia’s Adam Szudrich.
Festivals like these, often advertised with poster printing and social media, provide a space for playwrights to experiment with full works in a theatre scene often dominated by revivals. The festival was created by The Very Useful Theatre Company and was first held in 2017.
The 2021 edition of the Newmarket International Festival of One-Act Plays is set to run between September 7 and 9, with all shows taking place at the Old Town Hall.
