Philmore Hamilton Park showcased plans for combined elements of a public park and a rainwater management facility at an event in Newmarket recently, allowing residents to take a look at an unusual proposed park.
Newmarket residents felt the need for the management facility after flooding in 2014, and city planners decided to make the facility a dual-use space by adding programmable recreation space, including a fountain, a theatre space for events, and a playground.
Citizens got a chance to understand the proposed park at the city’s iWonder event during the first weekend of March. The exhibit included five activity stations such as a ‘rain room’ full of man-made rain clouds constructed out of beads and a ‘rain bar’ consisting of water-based food such as melon and Jell-O. Organizers wanted to emphasize the concept of rain as an enjoyable theme. One activity allowed kids to reveal the secret message “rain is cool, rain is awesome.”
Raising public awareness of municipal projects, whether it be through events like iWonder or tools like brochure printing and Promotional Products, is essential to gaining support for such endeavors. The exhibition was attended by over 100 spectators, including children who enjoyed the hands-on activities. Adults could take a look at concept drawings and provide feedback.
While the plan still has to be finalized and approved by the city, responses towards the park were generally positive. Soon enough, in Newmarket there may be no better time to go to the park than during a rain storm.
