Newmarket organization raises money for scholarships

The Aurora/Newmarket chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) recently held its annual Books and Bottles fundraiser, raising over $3,000 to create scholarships for female students.

This year’s version of the fundraiser, called “Books and Bottles 2.0”, was the first to be held online. It involved both selling over 1,000 used Books and collecting money through bottle returns. The money will be contributed to the organization’s Charitable Trust, which plans to award $27,000 in scholarships between 15 female secondary graduates and post-secondary students in the Newmarket area who need assistance in affording their education.

CFUW Aurora/Newmarket is one of the century-old organization’s largest chapters, with more than 200 members. The group has also raised thousands of dollars this year through initiatives like card sales for its own operations and an initiative with York Region to encourage youth in care to stay in school.

This year has seen charitable organizations adapt their fundraising events to take place online, outdoors or follow social distancing while keeping up a spirit of community. Such events are often advertised through tools like flyer printing.

The results of the Books and Bottles fundraiser were announced on December 1, and the event was so successful that another sale is planned for the spring, with dates between March 22 and April 5, 2021 already picked out.
