Newmarket Optimists to host Fish Out

The Newmarket Optimist Club has its annual Fairy Lake Urban Family Fish Out set for this July.

The free event will give city and suburb-bound kids a chance to experience fishing and learn about nature conservation. Participants will be supplied with fishing equipment and bait, and can enjoy a barbecue afterwards.

After being shown the ropes (or lines), the new fishers can compete to see who can catch the biggest or most fish, but the main focus will be on wetland education and having a good time. Additional programming will contain details on respecting and maintaining the environment.

The Fish Out is typically supported by Fishing Forever, an organization which aims to support recreational and sport fishing, as well as other sponsors like Aurora Bass Masters. Past events have included give-aways and other rewards.

The Optimist Club, part of the worldwide Optimist Society organization, hosts community events throughout the year, often with a charitable component, like the Motorcycle Poker Ride and Flashback Dance, featuring music and fashions from past decades. Local events like this, typically advertised through flyer printing campaigns, can be a popular way to try out new hobbies or experiences.

The Fairy Lake Fish Out will take place at Fairy Lake Park in Newmarket on the morning of July 5. No fishing licence is required.
