It is not every day that a resident is recognized for outstanding achievements by being awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for outstanding contributions in both Ontario and Canada. Newmarket resident and United Way York Region Past chairperson Charles Beer, however, is being recognized as just that person.
In recognition of important distinguishing achievements pertaining to community involvement that have been well-recounted in the media, Beer has been recognized as influential in helping making the United Way the largest community mobilizer in the region, through structuring and strengthening its commitments in the non-profit sector. Beer continues to act as mentor to new chairperson Helen Murray.
The recipient of the commemorative award, which celebrates the Queen’s ascension to the throne 60 years ago, will surely be celebrated in the media, as Beer’s commitment towards shaping United Way and working to combat social justice issues has personally touched the lives of thousands of residents in the Newmarket and York Region. Beer’s involvement in the non-profit sector is extensive, through the United Way, Counsel Public Affairs, Canadian Executive Service Organization, and a political career with the Ontario Government as Community and Social Services Minister.
A framed citation and letter signed by the Governor General of Canada, as well as a commemorative pin, also accompanies the medal.
Printing services of the Jubilee Medal award include press releases of Beer’s accomplishments, as well as printed media headlines and photographs of the award and Beer’s extensive community involvement spanning many years.
The Jubilee Medal was presented at Queen’s Park by Vaughan MPP Greg Sorbara.
