The Newmarket International Festival of One Act Plays will be returning this September, offering exposure for emerging theatrical artists.
The local tradition will begin with the popular opening night Red Carpet Party, with live ambient entertainment before the curtain parts for three of the festival’s plays: The Well, Dark Horse, and Son of a Temperance. There will be matinee and evening shows throughout the weekend, each including two or three plays, with each play being performed multiple times. Other titles include This is My Stop, Road Trip, and Nail Polish.
In addition to the plays performed, there will be a master class workshop for experienced actors and directors, led by Canadian theatre veteran Lee Wilson. The festival will also include limited-space free workshops for young and up-and-coming actors, directors and writers. All shows will be fully aphasia accessible.
The festival offers a variety of ticket packages, including a weekend pass and “dinner and a show” tickets. Theatre festivals like this often use methods like brochure printing and social media to highlight all of the talent involved. This year’s festival will be adjudicated by Jason Silzer, with the top plays and performers recognized at the end of the weekend.
The 2025 Newmarket International Festival of One Act Plays will take place from September 4 to 7 at Newmarket Old Town Hall.
