Newmarket festival to celebrate vocal arts

The Newmarket Voice Festival will celebrate its 25th year this winter with a week of musical and spoken word competition and performances.

The Voice Festival is designed to highlight vocal performance in all genres, including classical and popular music, musical theatre and dramatic spoken word pieces. Participants can include solo acts, as well as small ensembles, and they will be judged by distinguished adjudicators who will provide feedback on their skills. The top three performers in each category and age level will advance to the Provincial Competition in June, representing the Newmarket Voice Festival. The top performers will also be part of a Concert of the Stars performance following the end of the festival.

This year marks big changes for the festival, with the event moving to a February time slot and introducing classes for Popular Voice and Speech Arts. It will also be the first time in multiple years that the event is held in-person. There is an emphasis on education and skill development throughout the weekend, with a number of seminars held for vocalists at all levels. Choral competitions and festivals like this often use poster printing, social media and other tools to attract both participants and spectators.

The 2023 edition of the Newmarket Voice Festival will be held from February 21 to 25 at the Old Town Hall, with the Concert of the Stars held on March 3.
