A pair of Newmarket musicians, Saunda Arnold and Michael Wasylensky, have begun putting on driveway concerts for both neighbours and people in need of musical inspirations.
The two are long-time friends and members of the long-running senior musical group, the String Alongs, which are currently on hiatus. They sing easy-listening standards like “Put on a Happy Face”, sometimes with lyrics altered to deal with current events, along with upbeat folk, roots and children’s music. This has made the pair popular among local seniors, so they have announced plans to start “touring” to local homes and residences where they will put on personal concerts, whilst adhering to social distancing measures.
The concerts started in their own garage, and drew neighbours sitting on the lawn and sidewalk. Since then, they have invited talented friends and neighbours to their makeshift stage. Musicians have had to adapt to changes in the industry, using innovations like live-streams from home and drive-in shows, as well as time-tested tools like flyer printing and Promotional Products. No matter what the circumstances, live music remains in demand as a source of entertainment and connection.
