Newmarket celebrates Black History Month with art exhibition

A newly-formed community group in Newmarket, Ontario will be commemorating Black History Month this February with an art exhibition.

The Newmarket African Caribbean Community Association will be presenting ‘Still I Rise’, an exhibition that aims to highlight stories of resilience and strength in the Canadian and international black communities. The exhibition advertises itself as featuring:

“The themes of racism, identity, activism, celebration of choice and action from the perspectives of contemporary African Canadians, featuring the works of Toronto based artists Gordon Shadrach and Syrus Marcus Ware, complemented by artworks of youth in our community. The array of narratives and personal stories are boldly expressed in portraits and other Forms.”

Creative endeavours, whether they be visual art, music, graphic design, literature, or other Forms of self-expression, can often give small and marginalized communities a voice. In smaller cities like Newmarket, such efforts are often supported by local businesses like bookstores, Print shops and art galleries.

The exhibition is currently taking place at Newmarket Old Town Hall and runs until February 23. A special event took place on February 9 that featured live speakers focused on similar themes to the exhibition. Children and youth will also have the opportunity to participate hands-on in activities like portrait drawing and steel drumming. Both the exhibition and the event are free for the public to attend.
