Newmarket becomes a winter wonderland

While many Canadians bemoan the start of winter, the city of Newmarket, Ontario takes the occasion to put on a dazzling light display.

The annual Winter Wonderland, also known as the Newmarket Ice Lounge, opened at the end of November and will be open through the holiday season and until early January. The outdoor event space will feature holiday light displays, ice skating, musical performances and more.

Winter Wonderland opened with an official lighting ceremony on November 30, with a performance by hula hoop acrobat Bex in Motion. Similar performances, involving fire and LED lights, will take place every Friday, with performers Scarlet Black and Hoop U joining in the revelry.

Community events like Winter Wonderland are one of the best means for unconventional performers like these to get their name out, alongside social media and poster printing services. In addition to the Friday performances, organizers encourage people to come out to the mysterious ‘Surprise Saturday’.

The holiday light display, advertised as the most beautiful in the city, is the main attraction of the Ice Lounge. Visitors can also take part in ice skating and miniature train rides for the kids. Free hot chocolate and fun buns are available, as well as food from the Wickedly Sinful Food Truck. Winter clothing donations will be accepted for the Mitten Tree. The attraction will be open until January 4.
