This November, the Newmarket Citizens Band will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in style with a special concert.
The theme for the concert will be “Celebrate!”, commemorating the sesquicentennial anniversary, as well as the return to live performance and the support the Newmarket community has provided the group. The band is one of the oldest continually existing concert groups in Canada, marking its founding date in 1872 but with roots going back as far as 1843. The group has had countless members pass through and performed in regional competitions as well as for holidays and special occasions, such as Canada’s own 150th birthday in 2017. It frequently performs during the summer and in Santa Claus parades during the holiday season.
The celebratory concert will also include the York Regional Police Community Chorus as special guests, and is sponsored by the Town of Newmarket. The Citizens Band consists of dozens of members from Newmarket and surrounding communities and includes a mixture of traditional instrumental music and newer songs such as film scores and Broadway musical numbers. Community groups like this, including orchestras and symphonies, perform in shows often advertised through tools like brochure printing and local media and help provide opportunities to local musicians
The 150th Anniversary show for the Newmarket Citizens Band will take place on November 5 at the NewRoads Performing Arts Centre.
