An archivist has been granted the responsibility of undertaking the restoration and digitization of the Newmarket Historical Society Archives.
Emma Stirling is carrying out this work for the Newmarket Historical Society and the Town of Newmarket. She will will work on cataloging and digitizing all the contents in the archive over the course of 2024. While the process is slow-going, Stirling says it’s going well so far.
The historical society has dedicated years to this project, raising over $45,000 to hire an expert archivist on contract. President Erin Cerenzia expressed her excitement as the project finally takes shape, acknowledging the countless hours of volunteer effort from the board.
The archives had been closed for several years as the society gathered funds for the project, and will remain inaccessible during the project's duration.
Currently, the archives house over 2,500 images of Newmarket, official town documents dating back to 1805, one of the most comprehensive collections of the Newmarket Era, early maps, Books, family records, and historical accounts of the area.
Emma Stirling's contract extends until 2024, and upon project completion, Cerenzia anticipates the creation of a manual to guide historical society volunteers in maintaining the archives and digitizing any future additions.
Getting the word out about the importance of archiving can be tricky. Organizations like this one can look into brochure printing services to help promote them.
