Supporters, volunteers and a healthy amount of printed advertising for the MS Society of Canada have made the MS Walk a Success in the entire York Region on April 22nd 2012.
A trio of local events managed to raise more than $243,000 in the entire region, an impressive number for the charity. More than 1,000 York Region residents, with participants hailing from Markham-Stouffiville, Newmarket and the Richmond Hill, Thornhill-Aurora area laced up sneakers to raise money for the society this weekend.
Across the entire province more than 17,500 Ontarians walked, raising a total of $4 million province-wide. Funds raised will go towards programs and services for local residents with multiple sclerosis as well as research and treatment programs to identify the causes, treatments and cures of the disease.
A healthy amount of poster printing n the area helped advertise the MS Walk throughout the region, encouraging residents to either walk or volunteer to support the event. The MS Society of Canada had been promoting the walk for quite some time, encouraging both walkers and volunteers to help co-ordinate the logistics and make the walk a success. 435 participants hailed from the city of Newmarket alone, the second highest number in York Region.
Multiple sclerosis is a debilitating disease that afflicts more than 75,000 Canadians and is the most common neurological disease in young adults.
More walks are planned for the month of May. Individuals can participate as well as teams made up friends, family and co-workers.
