Monthly Newmarket collectors meet prepares for XL edition

Newmarket’s home for collectors of sports cards and comic Books is preparing to get super-sized next month.

The aptly-named Newmarket Card and Comics Show, a monthly event which was launched a few years ago, will be hosting a special ‘XL’ edition later this month. In addition to the typical vendors and traders, the show will feature a cosplay (costume) competition with benefits going to charity, and an artists’ alley.

Featured events include onsite appraisal of collectible cards and raffles for rare comic Books, and a rookie card of local hero Conor McDavid. In addition to reputable dealers in collectibles, the artists’ alley area will feature local and independent comic artists from the Newmarket area and Southern Ontario at large.

Card and comic shows have been around for a long time, often advertising themselves through colourful poster printing and flyer printing, but Newmarket had been without one for 20 years until organizer Frank Williamson came to town in 2014. A childhood collector who never lost his passion as he got older, Williamson had previously started a successful card show in Toronto. His goal is to introduce a new generation of children to the hobby while showing adults how sports cards and comics have evolved.

This month’s larger than usual meet will take place this Saturday, November 17 at the Newmarket Community Centre and Lions Hall.
