Lobo Iberico to bring Carnaval to Newmarket

The Latin festival of Carnaval may not typically be envisioned amidst the wintery scene of Newmarket in March, but a local restaurant is looking to bring a taste of the celebration to their Toronto-area clientele.

Lobo Iberico, a Newmarket-based Spanish restaurant, will be holding a Masquerade Carnaval to go along with the festive season. The event will see visitors dress up in colourful costumes and masks, symbolically shedding their normal identities and inhibitions. A prize will be awarded to the best-dressed guest. The evening will see a six-course tapas, or small plates, meal, with each plate paired with a suitable glass of wine by a LCBO expert.

Typically held in February or March, Carnavals originated in Spain as a way to celebrate historical events and figures. The tradition has spread around the world, with some of the most famous now held in New Orleans and Brazil. Events like these are often advertised through colourful banner printing and flyer printing, to match the elaborate costumes.

Located in a converted garage, Lobo Iberico is known for its adventurous tapas and has been named one of the best restaurants in Newmarket. The restaurant is often rented out for small private gatherings, but a big event like the Masquerade is rare.

Lobo Iberico’s Masquerade Carnaval will take place on the evening of March 26 at the restaurant’s Leslie Street location.
