Artist Frederick Hagan was a long-time resident of Newmarket, Ontario and a collection of his lithographs were donated to the Town of Newmarket after his death. Printing companies in Newmarket are supportive of the printing arts being displayed in public places.
Frederick Hagan was born in Toronto in 1918. A plaque was placed on his boyhood home in the Cabbagetown area of the city. Hagan studied at the Ontario College of Art; he became an instructor at the college after graduation. During his time teaching at the college, Hagan commuted to Newmarket every day. His works of art, which included landscapes and still lives, are on display at various galleries including the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
In 1989, Frederick Hagan was commissioned to create a series of postage Stamps. For this he created the “Exploration” series of lithographs which were donated to the Town of Newmarket and are now displayed in various Newmarket municipal buildings. These lithographs are also available for online viewing through the Newmarket Public Library’s website.
Frederick Hagan was awarded the Royal Canadian Academy of Art medal in 1998. He died in 2003. Many of his artworks can be purchased from the Bau-Xi Gallery in Toronto.
