City of Newmarket asks residents to take cultural mapping survey

The city of Newmarket knows that identifying and mapping cultural resources is an important step to supporting economic and community development resources and wants resident input on what those cultural assets are. Mayor Tony Van Bynen has asked that Newmarket residents and visitors take a quick survey that will help create a cultural database and identify the elements to support in building a vibrant and prosperous community.

Print companies should be involved in the cultural mapping process, since they help advertise and support the cultural assets that the city wishes to uphold, including arts and heritage organizations and traditions. Print companies support these initiatives through Print advertising and the dissemination of publications on behalf of various cultural organizations.

The survey and mapping project, known as ‘A Sense of Culture’, will be built using a satellite map of the Newmarket Community. Viewers will be able to see the past, present and future of cultural institutions in the town. The results of the survey will then form the basis of a cultural report card that authorities will use when assessing how best to support and encourage cultural activities and Newmarket’s master plan.

The survey Forms part of a $120,000 initiatives partly covered through a provincial creative communities prosperity grant.

A public forum is expected to take place at town hall on February 2nd and Print companies who support the arts and heritage organizations are strongly encouraged to be in attendance.

The cultural map will be available on the town’s website by summer.
