Charity racers to run in Newmarket

Newmarket will be home to a charitable run this October, as the Run for Newmarket event holds its first edition.

The event is designed to be a way to encourage community spirit and support local non-profits. Participants can sign up for 10-kilometre or five-kilometre runs, or a one-kilometre fun walk, and are encouraged to bring family members and take the distance at their own pace. The run will begin with an opening ceremony and include festivities around the finish line. The first 100 registrants will receive a Run for Newmarket promotional shirt.

While times will be recorded, the emphasis is on personal and community fitness instead of competition. The event also allows participants to fundraise as part of a team representing their workplace, family or friend group.

Run for Newmarket aims to raise $10,000 from registration fees, in addition to donations and pledges made as a commitment to finishing the course. The money raised will go towards two local charitable organizations: Newmarket Food Pantry, which works to feed those in need, and Blue Door, which provides emergency housing to those at risk of homelessness. Fundraisers like this, often advertised through tools such as poster printing and social media, can be a major boost to a nonprofit organization’s work.

The Run for Newmarket event is scheduled to take place at Fairy Lake Park on October 2.
