Canadian Citizenship Week in full swing

Canada is a country founded by immigrants and it is still a popular destination for those wishing to improve their lives. The week of October 17-23 has been designated as Canadian Citizenship Week and there will be many events taking place, among them over 60 citizenship ceremonies in cities throughout the country. It is also a week when native-born citizens can ‘reflect on the value of citizenship’.

In 2006, the city of Newmarket produced a booklet called New Faces in New Places: An Informative Guide for Future Canadians. This 41-page booklet contains information about the Canadian Forms of government, the city of Newmarket, city services and how to vote. It also provides examples of questions from the test that those applying for citizenship must take such as who the first Prime Minister was and what city is the capital of Ontario. This booklet was produced because approximately 19% of all Newmarket citizens were born outside the country. The city wants to help these people to become acclimated to the county and their chosen city as soon as possible.

Canada is only improved by the influx of new Canadians; in 2010, over 143,000 immigrants became citizens of Canada. In addition to local guides such as the one from Newmarket, the government of Canada website provides the Discover Canada Citizenship Guide for those wishing to become citizens or for those citizens who wish to refresh their memories about Canadian history. The official Citizenship website also features quizzes, links and a citizenship poster. Printing this poster and hanging it on the wall will remind all Canadians what it means to be a citizen. It’s possible to get a poster printed from your local Print company.
