The Schwaben Club will be commemorating 95 years in Kitchener this February with its Grundungsfest, or “founding festival”, celebration.
The anniversary celebration will be a traditional gala, with formal or traditional “Tracht” attire requested. Visitors can eat a traditional German dinner, including a roasted chicken quarter or pork schnitzel, schwaben beans, and a dessert tort. The Edelweiss Trio will be providing live music for dancing or just enjoying the atmosphere.
The event takes inspiration from Kitchener’s strong German-Canadian culture and traditions, which have helped the organization thrive for almost a century. The Club specifically draws on the Swabia region of Germany and the Danube Swabian culture that thrived in Romania and Hungary before many migrated to Canada.
Proceeds from the anniversary event will go to benefit the organization’s operations in 2026 and beyond. The organization hosts a number of cultural groups including dancers, soccer fans, and young people, and recently organized a historic trip.
The anniversary event will be open to both Club members and non-members, with members and children able to purchase discounted tickets. Clubs like this often use events to help preserve and highlight cultural traditions, often using methods like banner printing and decoration to conjure places and times far away.
The 95th Grundungsfest Anniversary will take place on the evening of February 2026 at the Schwaben Club’s headquarters in Kitchener.
