While the event was traditionally a parade, it has transitioned to a street party featuring performances, food, and arts. Last year’s festival saw over 18, 000 in attendance. The weekend will kick off with a glow party, with visitors invited to wear glow-in-the-dark clothing or use provided arts and powder.
The second day will include a version of the traditional parade with Carnival-style colourful costumes and dance. Suggested costume themes include “Rewine”, re-using old outfits, or “Tech”, reflecting the Waterloo region’s signature industry. Images of colourful costumes are often used to advertise future events in poster printing and social media.
Musical performances will take place throughout the weekend, including popular Caribbean genres like reggae, soca, and steel drum. The festival area will include food trucks and local arts and crafts vendors. There will also be a family-friendly “kids’ zone” along Gaukel Street. Advertising states that:
“Whether you’re joining as a masquerader on the road or soaking in the atmosphere with friends and family, Caribana Ignite brings the essence of Carnival to life in a way that’s inclusive, unforgettable, and uniquely local.”
The 2026 Caribana Ignite event will take place on August 21 and 22 at Carl Zehr Square and along King Street in Kitchener.
